The recent furore over the Sam Cane v Robbie Henshaw collision in the second test between Ireland and New Zealand got me to thinking about the merits of using slow motion video to make judgements about potential foul play incidents in rugby. I think we have all heard the meme that sometimes, looking ...

The Dynamics of a Tip Tackle

With the recent sending off of a player in a high profile Rugby World Cup play-off match, the Dangerous Tip Tackle has become a focus of much of the rugby public, and the seemingly heretofore unknown "Spear Tackle Memorandum" has received its greatest public airing since it was first promulgated by the IRB in June 2009.

NELSON, 1 Oct. - Rugby referees are more accustomed to receiving criticism than support so World Cup referee George Clancy was taken aback when a small school in Motueka sent him a postcard ...

Discussion with other sports re officiating/laws

    Thread Starter: oldman

I am currently sitting watching Leicester City play Arsenal. Play was stopped for a VAR (TMO) review, but I noticed that unlike Rugby the clock continues running. My question is, do the law makers in one sport have meetings/discussions with other sports to discuss problems and laws? I feel the...

Wales vs Eng - Knock on and Time back on after asking captain to speak to players

    Thread Starter: Flish

I’m English, I’m biased, but not convinced the French ref is having a good game. In reverse order; 2nd Welsh try, for me the Welsh winger is in possession as trying to gather the ball, knocks forward on to himself, doesn’t regather therefore a knock on. 1st try, kudos to Wales for spotting...

    Caterpillar

    Thread Starter: BikingBud

Amongst many issues with the ruck currently, clearly the growth of the caterpillar is one area that could be reviewed and managed differntly. Should a ball being fed back in the caterpillar be considered out of the ruck and in the open? At times we see 3 or even 4 players extending the "ruck"...

Reviewing the Video with the TMO and other officials.

    Thread Starter: CoraJones

In the Wales England game yesterday, the ref called “time on.” Biggar delivers a kick on a sixpence and Adams scores. Farrell was up in arms. The whole word becomes rugby keyboard warriors. Could the ref have changed his mind if he'd asked for video footage to assess the situation? Could either of...
