At my level it's much more likely to be a discarded tackle bag, drinks bottle holder, dog walker, dog without walker, stray child or other team taking a short cut to their own pitch.

Thats how I read the law. Just struck me as being not particularly fair if, through no fault of the ball carrier, he/she concedes an attacking scrum.
Same reply as Crossref - I would allow the replacement in all 4 cases (as I would also for the YC scenarios).
Looking at the second part of that law,
6.11.b. If the ball is in possession of a defending player, the referee awards a touch down where the contact took place
Am I right in thinking then...
This has got to be the basis of the way forward. Reward positive play and find a way to encourage teams to commit more players to the breakdown to decongest other areas of the pitch:
Maul (open...
Nothing wrong with Slades actions that I can see, he knocks the ball, backwards out of Jalibert's hands and that's fine for me.
I can see the point he is trying to make regarding the tackle but I...
I've done far more exercise in the last year than than at any time since my 20s, am drinking about half what I was before lockdown and haven't lost a pound. Can't work it out. On the upside though I...
Ha ha, good to see someone has a sense of humour. Didn't he get swapped out of a European game in France after he received threats following his performance in the England v France fixture last year?
Still plenty of time for those positive covid tests to emerge yet and scupper the game altogether. Meanwhile several BBC reporters are found bound and gagged behind the England team hotel and no one...
All penalties need to be taken without delay. I think a quick penalty is only referred to in the laws with reference to it being taken before the opposition have had time to retire the full distance...
[QUOTE=Camquin;373361]Why should he give the offending time to get ready?
Because by asking the Captain of the offending team to have a word with his players the referee has actively made the...
The difficulty with over defining this is that you may not like the results. Looking at the replay it seems to me that at no point do May's legs lead his head and arms (as defined in the article as a...
As ever, once the minutiae is examined, it is possible to argue almost anything. What I am sure about though is if PG blows that for a knock on, very little would have been said subsequently and...
Crikey, my memory is even worse than I thought. I do remember playing during the period where they "legalised supporting" but soon after changed to allow full lifting on the grounds that no one could...
In this instance I think the law is pretty clear and a rewrite would not do anything to help. The current law list 3 occasions when a knock-on occurs:
When a player loses possession of the...
It does seem counterintuitive but no more so than a game in which senior coaches think their best chance of winning is by having less possession. I suspect the change was brought about because having...

Three questions spring to mind
1. Without referring to seagulls, how far beyond the back foot of the last player in a ruck does a ball have to be before it...
The quote from Jutze surprised me - "With regard to the second try I think there is a tendency to refer to the TMO too often when one can make the call oneself on the pitch and stick with it which if...
I agree with Decorily, the caterpillar is, at least more akin to a ruck than some other stuff that goes on. However the perceived problem could be solved by using existing law. I dont understand why...
Whilst finding the conversation between referee and TMO interesting I've always felt uneasy that it means that the TMO and AR's can't actually say what they mean hence the need for coded language...
Im not sure thats correct. The question was, is there a mechanism which would allow the referee to disallow the try after he had called time on. The answer to that is Yes. The Referee could have...

Just this in spades. Considerable portions of rugby law are subjective. On any given day I could probably be persuaded that May's try was a dive or a jump but I'd be consistent in not considering it...
I enjoyed the article, particularly the comment about refereeing the ruck being like watching a spin wash whilst trying to count your socks. Very good.
I think in the original scenario I would probably agree that the the team had made a choice, whilst advantage was being played, to drop the goal and that would probably be it. In the scenario where...
