    [Tackle] Re: Lifting Tackle

there's another fundamental mistake gong on here (from the coach).

Rugby is a complex games and -- like it or not -- referees have different approaches, different opinions, different...

    [Tackle] Re: Lifting Tackle

I once reffed a game where a team has all been coached to take a roll or two forwards after being tackled. It happened almost every single tackle (until I stopped them obviously)
    It's quite hard...

    [Law] Re: New Touch Laws!!

I don't think it means that

But I agree it's very hard to parse , it's a exception to an exception, with a problematic 'and'

    (brackets would help)

[Line out] Re: Asking for Numbers

    I find that

    - in most games the two teams cooperate more or less effectively to match lineout numbers, and the time taken to form up and throw in is steady and manageable. In this case...

[Line out] Re: Asking for Numbers

but how - if the throwing team proceed to throw the ball in .... you blow the whistle? because the Law doesn't really support that, merely saying that the no-throwing team would then not be...

[Line out] Re: Asking for Numbers

the way the Law is currently worded just encourages all this silliness, it enables to the throwing side to create a little confusion about numbers that the non-throwing side don't really have time...

[Line out] Re: Asking for Numbers

    indeed.

WR need to work out whether it's important to have matched numbers or not.

I actually think that defenders with too many in the lineout gives an advantage to the throwing team -...

[Line out] Re: Asking for Numbers

It used to be the Law that the throwing in team were required to give their opponents time to match numbers

They changed that to say, rather, that the opponents will not be penalised if they don't...

[Line out] Re: Asking for Numbers

On contrast with LP, During Bristol v Leicester I noticed Ian Tempest frequently asking for numbers.
I think different refs do it different ways.

I leave them to it UNLESS it is causing a...

[Law] Re: 20.10 behind the kicker at a PK

yes that's way we ref it.

the issue I was pointing out is that
    - for every kick other than a quick tap, all players are required to get behind the kicker.
    - the law that requires them to get...

    [Law] Re: New Touch Laws!!

    but

A scrum, lineout or restart kick following a try or touchdown, awarded before time expired, has not been completed and the ball has not returned to open play. This includes when the scrum,...

    [Law] Re: New Touch Laws!!

which was what the law said before - had to be kicked 'directly' into touch.

but now they have softened the law saying it's OK if it bounces, clock is still on.

(Previous logic was that if it...

    [Law] Re: New Touch Laws!!

Nice to see confirmation that "directly " means without bouncing
Though not quite sure why anyone needed that confirmation as it is in the definitions, and has always meant that

    A welcome Law...

    Re: Penalty Try

i don't understand your confusion: the law requires the ref to go under the posts to award a PT.
That's exactly what we are discussing.

    Re: Penalty Try

Correct but by blowing his whistle (with a PK blast) he has successfully and clearly communicated that he is giving a PK.

So the decision is clearly communicated

(which is why whistle tone is...

    Re: Hand-off heights

I think the "excessive force" law , introduced in 2018 , is the key to this, gives us the tool to manage hand offs

    Re: Penalty Try

shrug, part of good management is to make it clear that a try is being awarded (calms down the non-offending team), and the law is unhelpful here as this has to be done under the posts.
