  1. [7's/10's] Re: What is the definition of the playing a ball in the scrum?

It's the sort of thing they could have fixed in 2017

Re: Wal v Aus: Coach Verbally Attacks Officials

well I imagine in this game there was a loud shout of backwards, play on?

It's basic reffing to shout when we make a close call, so everyone knows.

because he didn't normally make a decision at odds with what all 30 players are expecting?

I do appreciate there are two points of view here. Perhaps, given the TMO, the norms of international...

  5. [Law] Re: Law Change Proposal - Scrum or FK option after Knock-on

As previously discussed, I would go the other way and reduce the sanction on a ko , rather than increase it , and trial a law change that said that if no advantage is gained from a knock on, then...

[Law] Re: Incorrectly taken free kick

    Great story.
I feel sad because all the refs before that who had let it go, or let him take it again, basically failed him, as they set him up for that mistake in a game that really mattered

Re: Wal v Aus: Coach Verbally Attacks Officials

Yes, but we also don't want the ref to be the talking point, and the centre of the game , we would rather be invisible

Knock on would have helped with that. It's the expected decision

Re: Wal v Aus: Coach Verbally Attacks Officials

Shrug I was reffing I would rather call that a knock on (and potentially find out it went 2cm backward, my bad) rather than have that happen

Very early in my reffing "career" a TJ put his flag up...

Re: Wal v Aus: Coach Verbally Attacks Officials

I am not so sure. I think it's one of those situations where the best decision is the one that all thirty players are expecting.

It was a bit of a gotcha

[Law] Re: Incorrectly taken free kick

    i have never seen that.
but there is a widespread convention/belief amongst refs in England that incorrectly taken PK in youth games can be ignored (not universal, and not one I share, but...

Re: Wal v Aus: Coach Verbally Attacks Officials

the welsh try was very odd. I understand the TMO analysis that the ball went backwards -- but I don't understand why the ref didn't blow the whistle when it happened.. see that once on saturday in...

Re: Eng v SA: Kholisi YC

yes, I noticed that - the TMO actually tried to tell Andrew Brace about it, but the message was lost somehow - as Brace didn't take it in.

Not sure if it was poorly communicated, or Brace wasn't...

[Kit] Re: Smart Watch App for Refs?

isn't it quite time consuming to use the app AND paper?

and do you make a note of each PK? (app / paper / both ? ) I am never sure how refs do that when you always have to be ready for a quick...

    hasn't the player transgressed 20.8 ?

20.8 The kicker may punt, drop-kick or place-kick (other than for touch) the ball.

[Law] Re: Incorrectly taken free kick

That is exactly the logic behind 'take it properly' ... if they didn't actually kick it then the PK hasn't yet happened ... so take it ...

Which for me made perfect sense

    But the law makers...
