  2. [Law] Re: When and why the intentional knock-on rule was added to the rugby laws?

Hi crossref. I wouldn't go so far as suggesting it's a tactic, but I do think it makes more sense for defenders to wrap late to avoid this. In these situations the potential tackler is rarely in a...
  3. [Law] Re: When and why the intentional knock-on rule was added to the rugby laws?

I was, but I was really talking about the tackle as the ball player is passing, not while still in their hands. When I was playing, you wouldn't have attempted a pass in those circumstances....
  4. [Law] Re: When and why the intentional knock-on rule was added to the rugby laws?

I think some penalised knock-ons are probably not deliberate, eg where the ball hits a tackler's arms. This might encourage a hit with the arm wrap following

    Re: Penalty Try

That is true, but how often does it happen in the modern 15-a-side game? A quick drop-kick is more common. We didn't always bother when I was a schoolboy as the ball usually weighed a ton after 10...

    Re: Penalty Try

Is it simply convention? As a penalty try is usually awarded in the Field of Play, why cannot a referee signal the award of a penalty try at the place of infringement? It should be obvious to the...

Re: Premiership relegation set to be suspended

The BBC article was written in 2012 and the share structure has changed, probably when CVC came onboard. However, it does suggest that B shares may always have existed.

    What I really don't...

Re: Premiership relegation set to be suspended

It has changed a bit with CVC. Premiership Rugby is owned by a limited liability partnership, Premier Rugby Holdings LLP, partnership number OC426599. CVC's share is owned through Cobalto UK BidCo...

    Re: PK moves

Which law would they be contravening? And how is that different when the ball carrier runs behind any stationary player or group of players?

I agree that these moves were killed off by the...

    Re: France v Scotland

I was reflecting on this and wondering if the introduction of YCs (which I still regard as novel, even though it's 20+ years) has reduced the incidence of PTs and/or increased the threshold where a...

    Re: France v Scotland

This wasn't the clip I saw originally, but I only remembered it because it was so recent. My recollection is that the 15 got a YC for a no-arms tackle. It was most definitely given as a PT. The...

    Re: France v Scotland

I'm happy to agree I was wrong in law and have already done so.

However, you agree on the YC point. How can you have a YC without a penalty or penalty try? I think a PT would have been a more...

    Toulouse v Pau February https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d62och2cuMg

Here we have a try scored in the corner - the grounding was OK. Referee awards a penalty try and a YC (Pau didn't KO :hap: )

    Re: France v Scotland

Equity I guess. I accept that the law doesn't permit this, although I think a better outcome all round would have been a penalty try. WB was clearly going to award one if the grounding hadn't been OK...

    Re: France v Scotland

Thanks. So, how does one penalise the most outrageous piece of 'cheating' if a try is scored in the same place it would have been but for the offence?

Anyone think that WB allowed too many infringements before warning Scotland? I may be wrong, but it seemed like Scotland got away with more than France in similar circs.

    Re: France v Scotland

He probably would, but takes the risk that the threshold for a penalty try is often way beyond probable. Same with Rees-Zammit last week.

I'm surprised WB didn't award a penalty KO to France and a...

    Re: France v Scotland

You wouldn't penalise a ball carrier pushing a would-be tackler to the ground as they came in to tackle. Or would you?

    Re: new Head Contact Process

I wish World Rugby would indicate where the decision in the video was incorrect. The use of multiple examples is good - why don't they do this in the law book?

    Re: France Vs Wales

It's quite a good reminder really. At the time, many similar tackles were not even penalised; others got a penalty and others a YC. A red card was a bit different. However, we don't see many tip...

Hi Marc, I didn't mean to offend or bore you. Perhaps I could have been clearer. You implicity imply that all referees make mistakes and good ones recognise this. Like Balones, I see benefits in...
