    Re: Global Law Trials

    Answered my own question:
Law 12.2 Kick-offs are taken on or behind the centre of the half-way line. Sanction: The non-kicking team has the option of the kick being retaken or a scrum.

    Re: Global Law Trials

Aren't kick-offs / restarts after score nominally taken from the half-way line? Or could the kicker take it from anywhere behind the line back to the goal line? Is the halfway line in any half of the...

    [Law] Re: Trupping?

There's a technique that was (is?) used in RL called the Cumberland hipe, a wrestling throw over the leg.

    Re: France v Scotland

We all know this, too, about scrum put-ins: Straight. The scrum-half may align their shoulder on the middle line of the scrum, thereby standing a shoulder-width closer to their side of the scrum. Ha...

[Law] Re: Contact with the head

As it was free on BBC Red Button I watch the RL Challenge Cup game between Swinton and Oldham. So many of the tackles were upright, starting at chest height and rising that you would have worn out...

    Re: France v Scotland

Yes, if we are to enforce full bind until the ball is out for the side not winning the scrum, then surely we should require the other team to remain bound, too.

    Re: France v Scotland

What have we learned from the 6 Nations? That, for true lovers, a tournament can be exciting without crowds. The players' commitment is still the same. Rugby Union, historically, has been a game for...

[Law] Re: Time to take a penalty.

And when they're not kicking for goal, penalty takers appear to regard the mark they are given as an approximate point from which they can amble forward and / or increase the angle to touch before...

    Re: England v France

I looked at the mown strips and, if they are 5m, my estimate of 8m stands. I think the fly half was closer.

    Re: England v France

Thank you, I checked the LoTG
18.36 Once the ball has been thrown in by a team-mate, players who are not participating in the lineout may move forward. If that occurs, then their opponents may also...

    Re: England v France

To answer my own question: I looked back through the footage and estimate that Fickou, anticipating the play, was not more than 8 metres from the line of touch as the ball was thrown.
    A further...

Does that also beg the question: How far can you tap the ball forward and recover it?
I speak as someone who began playing in the days before the 'adjustment' was allowed.

    Re: England v France

France's second try (am I coming across as a biased England fan?). Interesting to see Fikou's starting position at the line-out as the ball left the thrower's hand - 10 metres?

    England v France

France's first try. Was Dupont's tap forward different from tapping the ball over a defender to regather and score?
  16. Re: Wales vs Eng - Knock on and Time back on after asking captain to speak to players

That's all right then. If neither side was ready should the referee have called 'Time on' and allowed play to restart. Gauzere, it's reported, now says he made a mistake.
  17. Re: Wales vs Eng - Knock on and Time back on after asking captain to speak to players

I disagree. The clips show there were still medics / water carriers from both sides on the pitch and, although play often continues will all kinds of non-participants littering the field of play, I...

[In-goal] Re: PK after the try - with a difference

If the ball had been grounded by the defence rather than the attacking team resulting in a 22 drop out and then the foul play happened, where should the restart be?

If we accept that, because a penalty has been awarded, play in the first half should continue after the conversion - what would be the location of the penalty?

[Law] Re: Farrell Late Hit v Italy

Can't find it in the current LoTG but I thought it was illegal to jump into a tackle. Was Jonny May jumping or was it a (v. fancy) dive for the line to score his try in the corner. Once he was in the...
