  1. Re: Wales vs Eng - Knock on and Time back on after asking captain to speak to players

    Unsurprisingly, Nigel has a view:

  2. [Law] Re: Reviewing the Video with the TMO and other officials.

Let's say it was an injury & the restart was a lineout. The ref should allow both teams the opportunity to get their lineouts & backlines set before allowing the throw. Making sure trainers were off...
  3. [Law] Re: Reviewing the Video with the TMO and other officials.

I think it was a poor call by the ref. Forget penalties & dawdling. If the ref blows time off (eg for an injury) then trainers are allowed on and both teams should be allowed sensible notice when...

[In-goal] Re: PK after the try - with a difference

the only question I have is if this had occurred at the end of the 2nd half, what would the referee have done?

    [Law] Re: touch after pk

it wasn't a change that I welcomed. I didn't/don't think that a team that deliberately puts the ball out of play should be rewarded for that.
  6. Re: Wales vs Eng - Knock on and Time back on after asking captain to speak to players

there are too many examples of players losing the ball forward then batting it back for that to be true.

A lineout jumper who juggles the ball before knocking it back to his SH will never be...
  7. Re: Wales vs Eng - Knock on and Time back on after asking captain to speak to players

The logic that the ref has applied is that once Red 14 makes contact with the ball with his hand he doesn't then lose contact with the ball until after the ball hits his leg and goes backwards. He's...

[Law] Re: Jumping or Diving Clarification required

I'd be looking for the tackler to release to allow ball to be recycled, but not roll away. In the messiness of this goal line scenario, a quick whistle would not be inappropriate.

[Law] Re: Jumping or Diving Clarification required

to the letter of law, no.

    in reality, yes.

Things are dealt with a little bit differently when try scoring is involved.

Consider a tackle inches from the line. Would we require the tackler...

[Law] Re: Jumping or Diving Clarification required

as far as I can make out this "you can't jump over a tackle" is in the same category as "you have to let him up". Unless there is some RFU edict that I'm missing. I've never seen anything from WR.

    Re: Bath Vs Wasps 8.1.21

The purpose of the photo is to explore the concept that the red captain may think that the ref is awarding them a penalty poo-pooed by you a few posts ago (#66)

[Law] Re: Superbowl - advantage question.

Indeed, not enough clever wit in the game these days. Had a not straight throw:"captain, option?" "We'll take a penalty, sir". They kicked the winning 3 points from that one. All had a good laugh in...

[Law] Re: Superbowl - advantage question.

I sat down to watch the super bowl deciding that this is it, I'm going to concentrate and understand this game.

Coin toss, "captain, you've won the toss, what would you like to do?" "We'd like to...

    Re: Bath Vs Wasps 8.1.21

I remember once doing this and one of the captain's thought I was signalling penalty advantage. At the next breakdown he asked me why we weren't going back for the penalty. Took me a second or 2 to...

    recruiting new referees

    Hi all,

I've recently taken on a new role in my Society focusing on recruiting youngsters to take up the whistle.

I'd be interested in hearing of any experiences, innovations, processes, what's...

    Re: Bath Vs Wasps 8.1.21

I take your point about players needing to make their own decisions but it is tricky knowing when the maul crosses the LoT from 10 metres back and it is sound preventive (preventative?) refereeing to...

[Law] Re: What's your worst nightmare?

what did the AR say? Oh sorry, forgot you're not allowed to have ARs :(
  24. [Law] Re: Should the ref be able to appoint a Qualified AR?

we used to have system for juniors whereby if the team provided a qualified AR for the game, then they received an extra competition point. Worked very well. And also a good source of future refs
  25. [Law] Re: Should the ref be able to appoint a Qualified AR?

not an issue here. If someone has done the AR course, then they are fully deputized ARs with no need to be appointed
