    [Law] Re: Clarification 1 "021

I think that is an Obfuscation rather than a Clarification.

When the referee blows the whistle to award a PK, play stops. However that is what we call "zombie ball" because play can be restarted...

    Re: France v Scotland

A Stuart Barnes article in the Times today is headlined: "Barnes didn't give Russell a fair trial after referral."

The article continues in legalistic vein - is "neck area" the same as "on the...

[Law] Re: Why isn't this pre binding penalised ?

In the 1996/7 law book the two banned techniques are flagged as changes to the law.

The Americans did devise a Flying Wedge technique, but it was a development of blocking, which was already...

[Law] Re: Why isn't this pre binding penalised ?

The Flying Wedge originated in Australia. The law banning it dates from 1996/7.

The wedge would form up, unbound, some distance back from the point of the penalty. The penalty taker would have...

    Re: France Vs Wales

Mathematically, probability is a number between 0 (Impossible) and 1 (Certain).

The referee simply has to make a judgement call, based on the actual circumstances and his experience of such...

[Law] Re: Jumping or Diving Clarification required

Many people have pointed out that running involves having both feet off the ground at times. The problem is defining the circumstances when the action should be penalised without leaving it too...
  8. Re: Wales vs Eng - Knock on and Time back on after asking captain to speak to players

I once assessed a visiting 70-year old referee for a Level 7 match. He told me he always asked for an exchange fixture early in the season to get independent evidence as to whether or not he was...

[Law] Re: Jumping or Diving Clarification required

Why do you think diving to score is sufficiently dangerous to need banning?
  10. Re: Wales vs Eng - Knock on and Time back on after asking captain to speak to players

A significant problem occurs when a player is tackled after releasing the ball but just before he actually kicks it. The would-be kicker usually gets sanctioned, so your counter fails..
  11. Re: Wales vs Eng - Knock on and Time back on after asking captain to speak to players

In today's Times, Rob Debney agrees with Nigel Owens that the two tries in question should have been disallowed.
  12. Re: Wales vs Eng - Knock on and Time back on after asking captain to speak to players

I have often pointed this out as a flaw in the laws.

A deliberate throw forward is just as much a PK offence as a deliberate knock on.
  13. [Law] Re: Discussion with other sports re officiating/laws

He said something about clever management but a misuse of yellow cards.
  14. Re: Wales vs Eng - Knock on and Time back on after asking captain to speak to players

The look on Rees-Zammit's face said it all. He "knew" he had knocked on and couldn't believe his luck when the referee allowed the try.
  15. [Law] Re: Discussion with other sports re officiating/laws

Some years ago I attended a seminar hosted by Chris White that included soccer referees. One female soccer ref, (by then refereeing at national league level) remembered her first league game. She...

    Re: 5 worst ref decision

Knock-on: When a player loses possession of the ball and it goes forward, or when a player hits the ball forward with the hand or arm, or when the ball hits the hand or arm and goes forward, and the...

[Law] Re: Jumping or Diving Clarification required

I remember Gregan tackling Lomu by holding on to his lower leg. If the foot had hit Gregan's head, would it have been appropriate to consider foul play by Lomu?!

[Law] Re: Jumping or Diving Clarification required

If the tackle is preventing the ball carrier from reaching out to score, then forcing the tackler to release is demanding that he gives away a score - which seems inequitable.

That is my "Mexican Stand-off" situation. I recommend a quick whistle and a 5-metre attacking scrum.

[Law] Re: Jumping or Diving Clarification required

The basic actions of hurdling a tackler and diving for the line are different. The former raises a distinct likelihood of boot meeting head when they are travelling in different directions. The...

"Field of play" should obviously be "playing area" (see Definitions). We have all seen tackles take place in in-goal - how else to stop...

[Law] Re: What's your worst nightmare?

There's an (apocryphal?) story about a referee who awarded a PK, and when the captain started to complain, he marched them back 10m. And again. And again. At which point the other captain said...
