Default Beware of this RWC scam.

To: Secretaries / Chief Executive Officers of Unions and Regional Associations in Membership of the IRB
    From: David Carrigy
Head of External & Member Relations
    Date: July 29, 2011
    Re: Online Scams

Members of the global Rugby family should be alert to a new scam that attempts to obtain personal details and bank account information by informing victims that they have won an official Rugby World Cup 2011 themed sweepstake. Those targeted by the scam are informed via email by people purporting to be from the IRB that they are the lucky winners of a sweepstake to commemorate Rugby World Cup 2011 with winnings of up to GBP 1.5 million. To make a claim, victims are asked to submit their personal details to an unofficial email address. As Rugby’s governing body we wish to assure you that the IRB is not in the business of running any form of sweepstake or money-themed competition. The IRB views this matter seriously and is bringing this matter to the attention of all member Unions so that the global Rugby family can be vigilant and avoid being duped. The International Rugby Board would like to make it clear that it does not operate and has never operated any form of sweepstake.

    Yours sincerely,
    David Carrigy

Why do people still fall for these scams?

I must go now and decide which of my bank accounts I want this nice Nigerian gentlemen who emailed me to send his US$40,000,000 into.

Why do I get twitchy as soon as I hear the words "claim a prize"?

If I've won something .... just send it to me. The word "claim" should set alarm bells clanging all over the county.

The number of extremly rich relatives, that I have never heard of, is a source of constant amazement to me. Then there is also the strange fact that all of them have been going on to meet their maker within the last couple years.

I also wonder at the fact that from all the lotteries I have entered I never won any of them, yet it appears that all I need to do to win one is to NOT enter.

Thanks Phil for David C's warning which has gone out to all English Clubs and Societies from RFU - we heard it at last week's Committee meeting.

An interesting spin on the same old Nigerian con of a large money transfer and you sending a small advamce set up fee (say $5,000).

rather like those annoying phone calls I get telling me I can claim some compendation for some insurance I allegedly took out. I just ask them to stick the details in the post6.

Can one of our mods promote this to an article and place on the front page. We don't want any genuine rugby fans ripped off.
