Even when I spent a few years as a soccer referee I kept using a finger grip (albeit with a Fox 40 whistle)

Is blowing every time a player catches the ball popular?

I envy your commitment to sport though, must take up a lot of time!

Ask ddjamo about us taking him for a tour of the Acme whistle factory in Birmingham.

It was surprisingly interesting.............and we all got a free whistle

It was! a very interesting history lesson came along with the tour. here's a picture of phil asking the owner why his whistles seem to wear out quicker than most referees.

When I was younger I had a stint using the Tornado whistle (same as football referees).

    I actually liked it.

I was able to get a good tone on it.
It wasn't confused with other referees on other pitches.
It was great in a fight, blow it very loud and close to culprits, immediately stop!

However the Hurrrmph brigade weren't to keen and when I started doing L7 games was told to bin it, which I did. Never got mentioned on a report as all agreed I used it well, but just the noise 'wasn't right'.

Thunder 58 now for me, as in Aus you never (well, rarely) have the issue of other games on at the same time.

I hate pealess whistles, but I came closer to being able to get on with a Tornado than any other pealess I've had.
