I have put my comments at the bottom.

Bryce bashing, or any referee bashing is the worst sort of cowardly attack in rugby. Yes, there are plenty of times the referee could have done better, but to attack them for it is pathetic. This forum, IMO, exists to discuss and improve standards, learn from mistakes, debate direction. That's why it is such a good forum. I wish other "forums" were more reflective.

I have no evidence to back this up, but my sense is that a number of referees continue DESPITE the verbal challenges they receive on a Saturday. However, too many stop too early for that reason.

Off high horse now, and back to writing about how to spread out some cones in a pretty pattern....
there's a huge difference between "bashing" and pointing out the fact that a referee is not the right guy for the job.

The trick with promoting anyobody is not to promote them beyond their capability - it is a well known phenomena that many people are promoted one step beyond their capability and then struggle.

Sadly I think Bryce was very nearly a good elite referee, but was one of the weaker performers at that high level.

However I have complete respect for his abilities in getting to elite status in the first place, he was no donkey, and had several great games, but didn't seem to have the self belief that identifies the very top level performers.

A bit like Murray in tennis; he struggled for years with that, but Lendl seems to have got his head right for him, and the result is plain to see.

I don't know what level of attention to this sort of detail, in terms of coaching etc., elite refs actually get. Certainly elite athletes would expect to recieve specialist coaching in mental attitude.

Bryce despite my attacks on his competency in many games on this forum was an all round top bloke. You could tell with how he interacted with players that he liked refereeing and loved being involved with great players like Ritchie McCaw and David Pocock.

Great interview from a great bloke. Loved his openness. Although I didn't admire him all that much as a referee, I loved how he would apologise, and man up when he made a mistake. Some don't tend to do that. Shows what a great guy he indeed was.

I will put my hand as being one of his bitterest critics - as a referee. He has carried himself well as a man despite the travails.

As others have said, being a very very good referee <> being an elite referee

Now I for one would have loved to have seen Vinnie Munro take charge of a senior international game. The man made it look so easy.

This is not a good precedent to set. If Bryce isn't good enough, then the NZRU just need not to nominate him anymore. Instead his rankings started to get influenced by politics, which might have caused him to quit earlier than expected.

The reason I don't like this is because the next ref that pisses the SARU or ARU (or their fans) off is probably going to get the same treatment just because it worked last time. And next time, it might be an up and coming ref just starting his career rather than a guy dropping off the scene anyway.

But how do you know if they've reached their peak, until you've tried them at a higher level?

BL came across as an honest and likeable bloke.

Actually, rather better known as a phenomenon.

English refs are not promoted above L.8 until they have been assessed as competent at the higher level not only by their own Society (which may be partial), but also by neighbouring ones. Seems like a reasonable but not infallible process. If it lets an inappropriate person through, there needs to be a quick mechanism to undo the mistake, as otherwise that person will continue at the level of their incompetence for far too long - the Peter Principle.
