Yup, which was the complete opposite to the team 'going forward' in my original scenario.

In this situation the feed is awarded to the team that was "going forward" — that is, the team that had the forward momentum at the ruck. If the ball is held up at a maul, the scrum is awarded to the team not in possession when the maul started

Indeed. a wise old baseball umpire told me that the call you need to make with most confidence is the 50/50 strike / ball call.

Blue vs Green, Blue Scrum, ball comes out blue side and we end up in an unplayable mess about 5m further back, no team in real possession (Junior Game). So restart is scrum to the team going forward, which arguably is green.

No complaints, but got me thinking as to whether going forward is literal position on pitch or does it imply possession? Even if you step back to ‘attacking team’ which was Blue, they weren’t at the time it all went wrong. Is there a correct answer here’s?

In Junior games there is only a 1.5 metre push allowed at a scrum, so how is it 5 metres back. If Green has pushed more than 5 metres that is a penalty anyway, subject to normal game management rules, calling them to stop pushing etc.

I read OP as ball has come out of scrum and blue scrum half or fly half have been tackled going backwards so Green have ascendancy at the breakdown and are "going forward"

The OP does not say the scrum was pushed back 5 metres.

That's correct, scrum didn't move 5m (I normally call hold drive at 1m to give them a chance), the question was more around the definition of 'moving forward' which technically was green even though blue has possession and it had been their scrum
