Default Quins v Exeter - Fortunate?

Was the result a fortunate outcome and a valid penalty try or was there an opportunity for the ref Christophe Ridley, to bail himself out and give the 4 points back to Quins?

Clearly the decision not to allow the advantage from the earlier scrum, 77 or so mins, was an issue but was it a corruption of the outcome to call a penalty try?

IMO it was another penalty .. and therefore possibly/probably another yellow card. But to go straight to PT was an error and unfortunately undermines what a good game he had for the rest of the match. With a bit of patience it could still of ended up being the same result.

Initially thought the same. But when watched it now, a couple more time, it is a penalty and Quins looked to be moving scrum forwards. I have no problem with the PT.

As I have said elsewhere, I think that the penalty which led to that scrum (Robshaw took the scrum option rather than the Penalty Kick) was more deserving of the PT and another

For those who haven't seen the match, Quins had (again) elected for a scrum option and had the nudge, but the Exeter Loose Head and Quins Tight Head slipped in the conditions and - with the ball at the back - Care played the ball to the open side. The Exeter backs had all come up off-side and the Quins #12 dropped the ball - with the defenders in advancing rapidly in his eye-line.

FWIW I thought that Rob Baxter was very measured in his post-match interview.

I'd love to be a fly in the wall in the referee debrief at HQ on Monday

It was a really tough last five minutes. After that bad error when Ridley blew too early and denied Quins a try , there was no room back

I thought his ARs were rather quiet (having been busy for the previous eighty minutes)

I thought one of the previous scrums had a good shout for a PT, but probably not the one that was eventually given. I also think CR could have given another pen/YC at either the offside, or the scrum that he gave the PT from.

Exeter were their own worst enemy in the final 10, they just kept infringing.

    Thanks!

According the WB. The ref has admitted it was an error.
