    Default When is advantage over

    Eng Ire 4mins

England knock on in own half
Ireland get possession .. and kick
Is advantage over ? No, because the kick goes directly into touch
So Gauzere comes back for ko

So adv depends on the *result* of the kick

In the same match Ireland had a penalty advantage when they were held up over the gain line.
Could the Ireland captain have asked to take the 5m scrum instead of going back?

This is very judgemental. Ideally the referee would call advantage over prior to the kick, then any kick error is the fault of the kicker. In practice the timing is tight, you don’t want to call advantage over with the ball in the air, so unless you’ve already called it you would let it play out, and come back for the knock on if the kick goes directly into touch.

it’s not ideal but consequences of a fast game and application of judgement.

If the kick was taken under pressure, then it might be deemed no advantage.

They could have opted for a scrum anyway. How far back was the penalty spot?

Absolutely the Captain could have asked....
Would the request have been granted? Well in my opinion yes... and if I were the referee definitely!

no pressure - from back of a ruck, no one hassling, no charge down attempt, no opponent crossed their ruck offside line in fact

It's still down to the discretion / opinion of the referee as to when /how to apply advantage to a great extent.

My guideline has always been that if a kick is taken under advantage that was clearly voluntary, then the kicker lives with the outcome. Advantage is not just a free shot where you can come back if YOU make a mistake.

The penalty was about 10 metres out, so they chose to kick for touch.
The Irish line out was not working, and the English stole it.
The scrum was doing a little better - but it was not the best day for the men in green.
