If you make a mistake you can be sure a lot of the players know it. Best to say you got it wrong straight away -and apologise; either overturn the decision or re-start with a scrum. Deflect any negative comments with 'you never made a mistake? at least I admitted it; And if players stopped shouting at me I might make less of them' (stop them appealing please, and the sooner, the better for everyone))
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others.

I think you must be at a higher level than I was, I'm not sure they would understand that, and if they did then they would poke fun at my Southern Softie Grammar -while possibly crooking a little finger.

Of the five on the website, this one has to have been the worst bit of refereeing whatever the decision.

The ABs were in possession with forward momentum and about 10m from the goal line when he blew his whistle - his big mistake was blowing up!

But the two real shockers I remember are a TMO awarding an 'own try' a few years ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlXVGhrq57I

And a pro 14 referee awarding a penalty try *when the ball wasn't even in play* (scrum collapsed before the 9 put it in)

    I can think of two......

The second one in particular is very problematic given this would have been looked at in replay. I do not understand how that cannot be a knock on.

Some on Twitter are claiming It didn’t go forward? But his hand was behind his leg, and it hit his leg, so ?!?

Knock-on: When a player loses possession of the ball and it goes forward, or when a player hits the ball forward with the hand or arm, or when the ball hits the hand or arm and goes forward, and the ball touches the ground or another player before the original player can catch it.

He lost the ball forward and it hit him on the back of his leg before hitting the ground.

I can only imagine they took a hyper-legalistic view of the wording and decided that the next thing the ball hit after he lost it forward was neither the ground nor another player. I find that view ludicrous. The law does not say or imply "next".

(Rees-Zammit obviously thought he had knocked-on).
He trudg’d along unknowing what he sought,
And whistled as he went, for want of thought.
