Pascal Gauzere also gives his view: Both were errors.

The quote from Jutze surprised me - "With regard to the second try I think there is a tendency to refer to the TMO too often when one can make the call oneself on the pitch and stick with it which if Pascal had whistled for a knock on there would have been no appeal by the TMO to review it". That Gauzere saw no knock on and awarded the try before talking to the AR and TMO seems to have escaped his attentions.

And we only have Joel's claim that Pascal admitted the error.

well part of that surely is the concept that if unsure let play play out and then review if needed eg after a try.

Rather than blow for a knock on, which prevents a score form occurring, which turns out not to be a knock on. We see this former process "all the time"..

Gloucester vs Cardiff in the challenge cup final a few years ago springs to mind. a try was disallowed due to the final pass being clearly and obviously forward (it was given, and i also called it obviously forward from my sofa!) but when replayed it clearly wasn't forward.

Cardiff ended up winning by less than a score.

So we go to the TMO - what standard of evidence does (s)he apply.
The on field ref needs to see a clear and obvious material infringement.
This was material - but I am note sure it clear and obvious given we have been debating whether it was for most of a week.

diallowed before it was dotted down eg wheilst the "scorer" was still running towards the in-goal?

Or after it was dotted down but with no TMO etc checks?

It may not have been a try, it may have been a try. But given the question asked by the referee I'd say the TMO decision was wrong.

If the question had been asked "Try or No Try" I could see a no try result as it is unclear - but even here you'd probably err towards the attacking team.
This was 2007... there was no "on field" decision. The referee went straight to the TMO who was correct.

    1. Clear and obvious that Cueto's foot is touching the touchline.
    2. Clear and obvious that the ball has not yet been grounded.

No try - in my book, that is about as conclusive as it gets.
