What's your worst nightmare?

Bit of New Year fun?

What's your worst refereeing nightmare - either imagined (keeps you awake at nights fearing it may happen) or real (keeps you awake at night recalling it)?

I'm obvs not a ref but I think my real concern would be stuffing up the time keeping and having to guess based on asking a passing dog walker what the time is and having to extrapolate from that!

I once forgot to put the clock back on and only notice some time later when a player asked "how long to go ref?". I looked at the time an guess ho long was left based on 14:30 hours + 80 mins + half time 10 mins and guessed from there. Thankfully no one questioned it. THat typ of incident is the one that occurs most often in the old nightmares.

I did that too lol. But like Marc, I just ball-parked it based on the KO time and the current time. Would imagine that's quite small thing though. Can't think of anything that would be have a realistic chance of happening. I guess missing a really bad High Tackle in an important game. Something like that.

7's tournament, previous match concludes, quick meeting with captains, teams on pitch ready to go, fear and panic set in, I run off to the referees tent to retrieve my whistle, run back to the pitch, "sorry gents"

Getting a nasty heat-related cramp right after HT, and being unable to finish a match.

Mid-May, but felt like mid-July. Upon showing up, I saw for three U15s games in a row, with 25m halves and a 5-10m break. First two games went without incident, and with 50+ margins of victory.

Third game, a minute into the second half, someone makes a break from the halfway. I go to take off, and my right calf immediately tightens and I collapse to the ground. BC clearly scores, so I award the try, and then the coaches run on noticing me in a heap.

The scoreline was already a blowout, so the coaches agreed to call it.

So much for a "tune-up," as it was my first outing since the prior November.

It would be ... arriving in good time at a club at the other end of the county; but not finding my sports kit bag until I opened the front door on returning home.

I turned up at a club for a 2nd XV game, only to be informed that they did not have a second pitch so they used a local council pitch. "It's easy to find - it's right behind the Primary School." I found the Primary School, but there was no vehicular access. I checked the nearby footpath and found the pitch was right over the far side, with several cars parked nearby so I set off to find the way in. I ended up at a cul de sac with a sign for the pitch pointing to a locked gate.

Back to the footpath. I walked over to the pitch and spoke to the few payers already there. Apparently "everybody knew" that the cul de sac sign pointed in the wrong direction, and I should have taken the cart track opposite. A helpful player took me down to the cul de sac and then a short distance further to find the nearest main road.

At the time it seemed sensible to walk back along that road to the primary school to get my car and kit. Bad decision. I somehow got lost and spent half an hour wandering around back streets trying to find my car. Eventually I found it but by the time I got back to the cul de sac and followed the cart track to the pitch, the first half was nearly over.

At half time I apologised to the captain, who had not been expecting me anyway, so we agreed there was little point in me watching just half a match.

I had to 'fess up to the captains that I had done this once. The three of us stood at the centre of the pitch working it out for about 3 minutes. Guess who got Dick of the Day...
