    Default Cool Down post-match

    Iím trying to find out information about the warm-downs for referees on match day. The National age-grade championships are here in Newfoundland in August, and as part of the referees training Iíve been asked by our National Referees Manager to put together a warm-up / warm-down session for referees. Iíve got lots of information on the warm-up, as it tends to be dynamic (lots of lunges, short sprints, dynamic stretches) with a focus on building up intensity to match time, which makes it enjoyable.

    The warm-down session, on the other hand, is a pain in the arse. Referees do not want to spend 15 minutes after the match doing static stretching outside when everyone else is showering up in the clubhouse, getting a cold BEvERage and avoiding the brutal weather (particularly here in Newfoundland!). I also donít want to keep telling them to do the same boring stretches that have been posted on the wall on the PE class gym since 1985. The other issue is that referees have just finished a mentally exhausting match, so tend to do a lot of post-match analysis with a million thoughts rushing through their heads. The cool-down to me is not just a physical process, but also a mental one so that the referee can focus on improving their level of game into the next match, which might be a few hours away.

    The above info is geared towards our Panel Referees in Canada, but still needs to be practical enough that they can do it given the grassroots facilities here on the other side of the pond e.g. advising us to spend 30 minutes with the refereesí personal athletic therapist after a match isnít realistic, nor is jumping into the pool immediately after the match.

    Anyone have any ideas, particularly on the MENTAL cool down post-match?

    Personally I treat the cool down as an opportunity to review the game, whilst it is still fresh in the mind.

    Plus the time spent with the cool down is valuable for allowing any players/coaches or spectators the pre-requisite time to cool off before they challenge you over a phase of play. Although you may not be first in the queue for a beer (or isotonic drink ) the challenge will be a lot more measured since they have time to cool off.

    My post match routine is, get back to the changing room to change the shirt into track/sweat top and go for a jog a couple of times around the pitch. The second lap getting slower as you progress round the pitch. Then finish with static stretches to lower limbs and chest. All whilst plugged into the mp3 player

    The purpose of the cool down is to shift any lactic acid build-up that occurs during the excercise, and return the heart to its normal rhythm and the body temperature to normal. This all helps to reduce the risk of future muscle injuries.

    My personal warm down is to sit in a crumpled heap in the changing rooms after the game. I'll follow that by a shower and stretching any problem areas I may have (injuries etc), and a bit of rehydration. I'll take my time as well, to ensure I have relaxed, and so have the players.

    If there have been any "contentious" calls in the game, then I also take the time to ensure I have my story straight, by replaying the incident(s) in my head, and if necessary referencing the law book (if I'm wrong, then at least I can admit it if necessary). May also make a call to fellow refs to see if what I called was right, especailly if it's not black/white. I'll also write notes on any red card while still fresh in my mind.

    Then it's off to the bar, for a drink, food, and chats with coaches, players, and the one man and his dog. If I feel that any conversation is going in the wrong direction, I'll opt out of it - agreeing to disagree normally.

    I leave any real dissection of the game until the next day, enabling me to input views of coaches, players, assessors etc. into the game. And then I'll only concentrate on things I think went badly, why and how to fix it, and then think about how the tackle&ruck went, and if I got that right.

    But then that's probably not what you're after. Personally I think it is a personal think, some like to go for a warm down run, and stretches, others write a full debrief in a note book, some take reams of stats, others run to the bar and practise stretching the gut.

    Pre match I have only ever warmed up the muscles...

    Post match, well a nice warm shower before cooling off and then sit and have a small cigar or light the pipe. Chance to come back down to earth ...

    As an assessor the routine is pretty much the same, apart from the shower!!
