And now it gets messier:

Whatever happened to just accepting the refs decision and getting on with it.
Anyone would think he had pissed in their bagpipes!

The on field soft signal from the ref came about as a result of complaints from the coaches that the on-field ref was abdicating responsibility to the TMO which was seen as a bad thing.
I know
But it was a poor decision. Once they have started down the video route the snap impression formed by the ref who saw it once should really be discarded

By all means defer to the refs view on the video footage, but forget the one time impression.. no longer really relevant

and especially because that on field call is entirely dependent on whether the ref could see anything at all, or half a milimetere of a ball somewhere

What happened to the days of peeling a couple of players away before making a decision? I felt like the held up decision was made a little too quickly, which obviously impacted how the rest of the discussion/decision played out.

Having seen the ball held up (on the boot presumably) did the ref blow up before the ball rolled off the foot?
In all the replays there was no sound. If the ref blew before the ball rolled off the boot then it doesn't matter what happened next.

The original camera angle (which included sound) was from the wrong side of the breakdown, so we don't know.

Very good point.
Does the TMO get synchronised sound when watching clips on their booth

Anyone would think he had pissed in their bagpipes!

There are elements of ownership and I would always advise critically looking within before seeking to apportion "blame" elsewhere.

Scotland did not sustain field pressure and keep the scoreboard ticking hence a single moment of high skill from the French left winger left them scrabbling to get back into the game.

I would offer the ability to manage a whole game including, possession, territory, being adaptive to the opposition tactics and not least sustaining the support of the referee, is one of the most important factors for on-field leaders. Many teams thought to be quite effective have come unstuck due to lack of adaptive and effective on-field leadership. As much as the Ref's decision is confused Scotland lost the game elsewhere, it wasn't the first time, won't be the last time.

I agree... in a scenario in which a defender has arms around the ball, I will still give it a second to see if the attacker can get the ball down... I think we generally give some benefit to the attacking side, but we need to maintain a level of parity, so I wouldn't give it too long.

However, in this situation in which only one player has, or is competing for, direct control of the ball, I would certainly let it breathe a little longer; and I feel in this instance NB was quick to blow his whistle.

So maybe just move to an honest, neutral exchange of:
Ref - “I didn’t get a clear view, show me what you’ve got”
TMO - “This is all I have, closest I’ve got to grounded is this, waddya think?”
Ref - “Hmm, looks <best guess> to me. <Makes a decision based on what we’ve all seen>”
Interestingly, the latest World Rugby video with NO says that if the ref is unsighted they can ask the question try or no try.

as an afterthought to that post...
Its clearly however not that much a "soft signal" ...
